Set up the reference architecture

Introduction #

The Humanitec reference architectures for Internal Developer Platforms (IDPs) are tried and true blueprints for building your platform. They provide a structure and common language for your teams to follow, and will help get your design right from the ground up.

The architectures are not just pure theory. Humanitec provides open-sourced, ready-to-use implementations of core parts of the architecture for major cloud providers and stacks.

Please find below links to the public GitHub repositories containing those reference implementations. The READMEs contain all the instructions you need.

We recommend installing the reference architecture with the optional Backstage portal if you wish to explore further material, especially the Scaffold a new Workload tutorial.

Red Hat OpenShift #

Unlike the Reference Architectures for the major cloud providers (AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud), the OpenShift variant does not provision a new Kubernetes Cluster. If obtaining a new cluster is your motivation for setting up the Reference Architecture, turn to one of the major cloud variants.
